Prosthetic and orthotic services have a central role to change the lifestyle of disabled people from being immobile to becoming mobile, useful and living with a dignity enjoying equal rights like other members of the society. This independence can reduce the cost of disabilities to individuals, families, and to the society.

Orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) is the evaluation, fabrication, and custom fitting of artificial limbs and orthopaedic braces. Prosthetists and Orthotists are not only practitioners; rather they are the artists, technicians and businessmen. It is perhaps the most rewarding of all the allied health professions, because it is making a difference…every day!

Prosthetics and Orthotics

Prosthetics is the branch of orthopedic sciences which deals with the study of design, manufacturing and use of prosthesis (artificial limb etc).

Prosthetists produce and replace the missing part of body functionally and cosmetically.

Orthotics is the branch of orthopedic sciences which deals with the study of design, manufacturing and use of orthotic devices that prevent, correct and support the weakened part of the body (support belts & special boots etc).

Orthosist produces orthosis that intends to support, prevent or correct deformities, protect a painful part of the body or improve the function of a weakened extremity.

Career as Orthotist and Prosthetists

O&P is an allied health profession with a variety of exciting employment opportunities available, including O&P practitioners, Pedorthists, assistants, fitters and technicians.

Orthotists and Prosthetists work in a variety of settings:

  • Private practice / Self Employment
  • Hospital Based Practice (Private / Public Sector)
  • Rehabilitation facilities
  • Specialty clinics and home health settings
  • Teaching and Training at Colleges and universities to prepare future professionals
